My Creative Process for My Little Dragon

The Skeleton

I first came up with the idea for my dragon by deciding that I wanted to draw my dog, but with a twist. I first sketched out how I wanted my dragon to pose. I wanted her to seem sweet and energetic, which would capture my dog’s personality. It took a little time but I was able to get out a very rough sketch on what my illustration would eventually look like.

The Rough Sketch

Once I had my base all figured out, I started with sketching out my design on top of the base. The face was a bit of a struggle for me to figure out, but I’m very happy with how it came out. I wanted the face to express a lot of emotion, and I feel like I was able to successfully do that.

The Inking

When I figured out how I wanted my sketch to look like, I went over top of the sketching lines and inked it with a darker brush. This part of the process took the shortest amount of time, since I had already figured out how I wanted the dragon to look like.

The Coloring

After all of my inking was finished, I created a new layer underneath my ink and started to color the face the way I liked. My dog has very chocolate brown eyes, so I colored the eyes two different shades of warm browns. My dog is also black and white, which made my coloring process pretty simple. After I finished coloring, I exported it out of Procreate and now have an illustration I’m proud of.
